about

'Go Home' from Colin Vearncombe's second solo studio album 'Water on Snow' a co-write with William Topley, originally released in the summer of 2000.

This recording featuring Stuart Wilde alongside Dogtail Soup, the band Vearncombe had created after moving to Ireland with his wife Camilla Griehsel and members of Interference, the legendary Cork based group led by Fergus O'Farrell.

In the summer of 2021 during a bubble of normality, Dogtail Soup went into studio with a number of guest vocalists to record an album of Colin Vearncombe songs for the Love Colin project. The purpose of the project is to continue Colin's legacy through his songbook to new artists worldwide and re-imagine his work. This is the seventh track from that session we are releasing.

Colin Vearncombe essayist Andrew Keeling notes... "Go Home, A song that refers directly to a Tom Waits-influence, with its quasi-American count-in and reduced arrangement of mainly acoustic guitar and resonant kick-drum on the downbeat. Vearncombe features not only on vocals and acoustic guitar, but also on dobro, harmonica and electric guitar. The second chorus includes low, blues-style/Mississippi-like backing vocals and the central Marc Ribot-like guitar solo, with its trebly Stratocaster dissonant gestures and octaves, brings a total shift to Americana."

Stuart Wilde is an Irish singer/songwriter based in West Cork. He trained as a recording engineer in Dublin, and later in composition with Austrian composer Karl Stirner. In 2011 Stuart released his first album 'The Black Crow' with German violinist Kathryn Doehner. Stuart toured this album throughout Ireland the UK and Germany. For his second album, 'Devil In My House' (2014) , Stuart teamed up with brother and drummer John Wilde (Jerry Fish band) and bass player Rik Appleby (Lionheart Productions) .

Stuart Wilde’s music is unique. Dark, heartfelt and poetic, his songs range from thunderous to tender, populated by stories of lost love, shadow worlds, dirty dishes and crows. Of late Stuart has returned to live music, performing with his band - The Bird Men, the music takes on a new edge. As a three piece its hard, raw and dirty, drawing on influences of Blues, Ska, Rock, Soul, Gypsy and New Orleans Funk, as a solo performer with guitar & foot percussion to accompany his singing, he makes a sound which could be described as alternative Irish Blues.

Go Home [written by Colin Vearncombe & William Topley]

Fake diamond rings on every finger
Purple shadows around my eyes
I show Americans del norte
The best of Paris’s underside

I worked the dirt in Oklahoma and ate my crow and humble pie
Though I walk through the Latin quarter
It’s still a dust bowl in my mind

You can’t make me go home
When I don’t wanno go!

I’ve lived on peanuts for the season
Bathtub martinis extra dry
Down in the thirteenth arrondissement
I waste my money on good times

You can’t make me go home
Don’t make me go home, I don’t wanna go
You can’t make me go home, la la la
When I don’t wanna go

Fake diamond rings on every finger
Purple shadows around my eyes
Down in the thirteenth, the fourteenth, the fifteenth arrondissement I waste my money line by line

You can’t make me go home
Don’t make me go home, I don’t wanna go
You can’t make me go home
When I don’t wanna go
