about
'What makes a Fool' from the 2009 'Black' album 'Water on Stone'.
This track was initially recorded in Colin's own studio, Jerusalem, in West Cork by Andy Patterson with some of the interference musicians supplying strings and piano. Maurice Seezer played the piano back then and he once again appears here with guest vocalist Míde Houlihan along with Colin's old band 'Dogtail Soup' for this wonderful re-imagining of a beautiful song.
Míde Houlihan is a singer-songwriter based in Clonakilty, West Cork, Ireland. She was the recipient of the IMRO Songwriting Award in 2015. Míde's songwriting prowess has earned her a well-earned spot on the list of great contemporary Irish writers, with lots more to come. Míde has been sharing stages with such names as Mick Flannery and Susan O’Neill, Doug Paisley, Jean Grant, John Spillane and Bill Shanley to name a few, as well as appearing at such festivals and events as The Liverpool Irish Festival, The Great Beyond, The Last Broadcast, Right Here Right Now (Cork), Ireland Music Week (Dublin), and Women’s Work (Belfast) and has performed in many of Ireland's top music venues.
Míde can also be found playing Drums for the all female rock band 'The Kate's' , a group of artists who only play music written by or performed by women.

What Makes a Fool ? [Colin Vearncombe]
If I had more than this to give
I’d probably do what you’re wanting me to;
I’d have you back
Though it tore me in two
I’m no exception to the rule
That makes a fool
And if I had more than one life to live
I’d probably want what you were hoping I’d got
And take you back
With no memory of wounds
No exception to the rule creates a fool
I don’t work it out but here’s my guess
You liked me better when you knew me less
I was lucky at the tables but when it came to love
It seems that
Dying young takes all the best
And I love you so much I’d be your clothes
Where my heart wanders the action follows
And as hard as it is to keep from wanting you
I’ve got a choice of what will kill me
And it won’t be you…
What makes a fool?
